Funding & Scholarship Opportunities for PhD

A number of competitive funding opportunities are available for outstanding PhD applicants at NTU. Students joining the group may be supported through university-wide scholarships, joint PhD programmes, or international funding schemes. NTU Research Scholarship

The primary funding route for most full-time PhD students at NTU.

The NTU Research Scholarship (NRS) provides tuition fee support and a monthly stipend for outstanding doctoral students. Most PhD applicants are automatically considered during the admission process, making it the most common funding pathway for graduate research at NTU.

NTU's most prestigious scholarship for exceptional doctoral candidates.

The NPGS is awarded to applicants with outstanding academic records, strong research achievements, and significant future potential. Successful recipients receive enhanced financial support and become part of a highly selective cohort of NTU scholars.

ADM–PolyU Joint PhD Supervision Scheme

A joint doctoral training pathway between NTU ADM and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

This scheme allows selected PhD students to receive joint supervision from faculty members at both institutions. Students benefit from complementary expertise, facilities, and academic networks while pursuing interdisciplinary research across art, design, media, technology, and creative computing.

Application Deadlines & Requirements

  • Application Deadlines: Applications are accepted twice per year for the August intake (1 October – 15 November) and January intake (1 June – 31 July).
  • Academic Background: Applicants should hold a bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline with a minimum GPA of 3.5/4.0 or equivalent.
  • English Proficiency: Applicants whose native language is not English should normally satisfy NTU's English language requirement, typically a minimum IELTS score of 7.0 or TOEFL iBT score of 105.
  • Technical Skills: Experience with Unity (C#), Unreal Engine, TouchDesigner, Arduino / Physical Computing, Python, PyTorch, JavaScript, Apple ARKit, or Google ARCore is advantageous. Demonstrated project experience is highly desirable.
  • Additional Strengths: Prior research publications, particularly as first author, open-source contributions, interactive installations, exhibitions, or related creative practice will be viewed favorably.
